Suicide project

The Suicide Project was founded on the belief that the only way to accurately account for all Canadian Veteran suicides is to ask for help from those affected by the suicide of a Veteran.

Unfortunately, these studies were limited in their ability to collect and release information due limitations imposed by the Privacy Act.

This project is not affiliated with any Department or Agency of the Government of Canada. There is no expectation that any one person holds all of the answers — our goal is to obtain as much information as possible.

The goal of the form is to obtain as much information about the suicide of every serving, released, or retired member of the Canadian Forces.

We at the Suicide Project believe that that the most accurate information is held by the Suicide project, fellow Veterans, and family members of those that Suicide project have lost to suicide. With the information gathered using the Suicide Report Form we hope to obtain enough data to find commonalities among all Veteran suicides.

Due to these limitations, we believe the information released to the public may be inaccurate as the reported statistics are far too broad, making the data provided impossible to be independently reviewed and verified.

It is time that we begin to understand the true nature of Veteran Suicide.

As we work on collecting as much historical data as possible we also move toward the goal of building an accurate, real-time database. But in the early days of the Canadian mission, the weather is making the operation difficult and even dangerous. The Suicide Project is a volunteer driven initiative with the goal of generating independent and accurate statistics on suicide rates of Canadian Veterans.

By creating a private initiative we can ask for this help, gathering important information without having to work around the legislative issues that may have caused unverified information to be released in recent studies. We hope that through our research we can obtain accurate statistics on suicide in the Veteran community so as to identify the appropriate support, benefits, and programs needed to help veterans and reduce suicide rates.

It is through future partnerships with the Department of Defence, Canadian Forces, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, that we hope to accomplish these goals.
